Use Cases The core superclasses and property groups of ESIM are based on a conceptual decomposition of the energy flows inside energy systems. More specifically, ESIM follows a decomposition of energy systems into subsystems and components which can serve either as (1) energy source, (2) energy transformation, (3) energy distribution, (4) energy storage, (5) automation and control, as well as (6) energy consumption or (7) energy-related information. This conceptual decomposition of energy systems into core elements of energy flows is useful as modeling paradigm for e.g. energy performance analysis, technical monitoring, energy simulation, as well as design and operation of HVAC (heating, cooling and air conditioning) or smart grids systems. Moreover, among the several entities descending from the core concepts, a distinction is made between entities used for physical, informational, functional and business-related purposes. More than the description of complex systems, ESIM has been also developed for enabling integration of further system-related information, like e.g. for integrating sensors data, extending BIM models, linking technical specifications, etc...
